    Why California is seismically active

California sits on the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates, dominated by the San Andreas fault system. The USGS estimates a greater than 99% chance of a magnitude 6.7 or larger quake somewhere in the state within 30 years. Southern California alone records about 10,000 quakes a year, though most are too small to feel.
