    Why Chile is seismically active

Chile holds the record for the largest earthquake ever instrumentally recorded, the 1960 Valdivia event at magnitude 9.5. The Nazca plate dives beneath the South American plate at about 7 cm a year, one of the fastest convergence rates anywhere. Chile averages a magnitude 8 or larger roughly once a decade.
