    Why Indonesia is seismically active

Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire where the Indo-Australian plate subducts beneath the Sunda plate. The 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake reached magnitude 9.1 and caused a tsunami that killed more than 220,000 people across the Indian Ocean. The country averages several damaging quakes a year and hosts about 130 active volcanoes.
