    Why Italy is seismically active

Italy sits where the African plate pushes into the Eurasian plate, crumpling the Apennines down the spine of the peninsula. Central Italy has seen repeated destructive quakes, including L'Aquila in 2009 and Amatrice in 2016. Most Italian earthquakes are shallow, which makes even moderate magnitudes capable of serious damage to historic towns.
