Why Worldwide is seismically active
The USGS National Earthquake Information Center locates roughly 20,000 earthquakes a year worldwide, about 55 a day. Around 16 reach magnitude 7 or higher in a typical year. Most happen along the boundaries of tectonic plates, with the Pacific Ring of Fire accounting for about 80% of the largest events.
