How to Check for Earthquakes Near You
Use the region pages and filters to see recent quakes close to where you live, and read the result correctly.
- 1
Open the region closest to you
From the home page, pick the region that contains your area, such as California, Japan, or Turkey. Each region page filters the live USGS feed to that geographic box, so you only see events nearby instead of the whole planet.
- 2
Set a time window
Switch between past hour, past day, and past 7 days. If nothing shows in the past day, widen to a week. A quiet day is normal for most regions, so an empty list usually means calm, not a broken feed.
- 3
Filter by magnitude
Use the magnitude buttons to hide the smallest events. M2.5+ keeps quakes people might feel, while M4.5+ shows only the ones likely to make local news. Lower the filter if you want to see the full background activity.
- 4
Open the USGS detail page
Tap any quake to jump to the official USGS page for that event, where you can see a map, felt reports, and any tsunami information. The tracker links out rather than copying, so you always land on the authoritative source.
